This year we grew a variety called &#8220;Tigerella&#8221; and we seem to have more than usual unripe fruit and so have decided to make <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>green tomato chutney<\/strong><\/span> with some of them. We have used the recipe given below many times before. It is the simplest one that we know of.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_170\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><strong><strong><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-170\" href=\"https:\/\/oliver1.co.uk\/food\/?attachment_id=170\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-170\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-170 \" style=\"border: 10px solid white; float: right;\" title=\"Unripe Tigerella Tomatoes\" src=\"https:\/\/oliver1.co.uk\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/tomatotigerellaunripe-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Unripe tomatoes\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/strong><p id=\"caption-attachment-170\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unripe Tigerella Tomatoes<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3.5lb (1.5kg) green tomatoes<\/li>\n<li>2 pints (1.13L) white malt vinegar<\/li>\n<li>1 lb (454g) brown sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon salt<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon ground ginger<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon mustard seeds<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon ground allspice<\/li>\n<li>10 cloves<\/li>\n<li>1 onion (about 6oz, 170g) finely chopped<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003300;\"><strong>Method:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_171\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-171\" href=\"https:\/\/oliver1.co.uk\/food\/?attachment_id=171\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-171\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-171\" title=\"Ripe Tigerella Tomato\" src=\"https:\/\/oliver1.co.uk\/food\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/tomatotigerellaripe-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Ripe tomato\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-171\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ripe Tigerella Tomato<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Cut the tomatoes into small pieces and put into a large pan with the vinegar, sugar and salt. Heat gently, stir and dissolve the sugar. Add the spices and the onion, bring to the boil.<\/p>\n<p>Boil gently, uncovered, for 1.5 &#8211; 2 hours by which time the mixture should be fairly thick.<\/p>\n<p>Allow to cool slightly and then carefully pour into sterilised glass jars, seal and allow to cool before labelling.<\/p>\n<p>You can re-use commercial jam jars provided that they are completely clean and sterile. Pay particular attention to the lids.
